This year (2024), Boulderdash Indoor Rock Climbing celebrates its 20th anniversary. In 2004, Boulderdash opened its first facility in Thousand Oaks. Today it has more than 500 members, many of which climb several times per week. The company has also expanded to two additional locations in the region.
Co-owners Christiaan Luneberg and Paul Farkas were no strangers to Thousand Oaks before opening Boulderdash Indoor Rock Climbing. They were raised right here in the city and spent much of their childhood together exploring all Conejo Valley has to offer. Christiaan and Paul bonded at a young age over a shared sense of adventure and love for the outdoors. Eventually, they discovered the joy and thrill of rock climbing.
“The idea for Boulderdash Indoor Rock Climbing came about because we simply could not get enough of climbing. We wanted an easy access alternative when climbing out in nature wasn’t feasible. We also wanted to introduce others to this incredible activity,” Christiaan shares.
Enthusiasts point out that climbing is not just a great physical exercise but a mental one that promotes overall health and well-being. Each movement requires physical strength and involves a great deal of problem solving. “Rock climbing demands a great deal of focus, but it also offers a sense of meditative mindfulness. When you summit, the sense of achievement fills your spirit,” Christiaan orates.
Boulderdash customers range widely in age and experience. “We have young people, seniors, and families with children. We have experienced climbers squeezing in an hour to keep that muscle memory fresh. And we have lots of first timers. We are here for everyone. We’ve got you,” Christiaan states. “This community is pretty special. It’s still so cool to see different kinds of people and families all enjoying this healthy and fun activity together,” he proudly adds.
We invite you to join the City of Thousand Oaks in congratulating Boulderdash Indoor Rock Climbing as our new Business Recognition Program awardee and on their 20 years of success in Thousand Oaks. We acknowledge them not only for their incredible achievements in business longevity and growth, but for their ongoing contribution to Thousand Oaks’ blossoming experience-based economy.
