Be Prepared for El Niño

An El Niño weather event is marked by warm water in the equatorial Pacific. Effects of El Niño are often felt in California as it changes the atmosphere and ocean, including increased rainfall and warmer temperatures.

Increased rainfall can lead to flooding, mud and debris flows, and power outages.

Before the storm:

  1. Clear gutters and drains around your home.
  2. Check your roof for leaks and make needed repairs.
  3. Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and other loose items that could become hazards in high winds.
  4. Prepare an emergency supply kit with food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other essentials.
  5. Register for VC Alert at ready.venturacounty.gov/vc-alert
  6. Obtain sandbags if your property is prone to flooding.

During the storm:

  1. Turn Around. Don’t Drown! Do not drive through flooded roadways. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  2. Report fallen tree limbs to toaks.gov/service
  3. Stay away from flooded streets, standing water, downed power lines, and moving mud or debris.
  4. If water is rising quickly, move to a safe location or higher ground.
  5. Follow official alerts and instructions from the City and public safety officials.

After the storm:

  1. Follow guidance from authorities and monitor weather forecasts before going outside, particularly when flash flooding remains possible.
  2. Avoid walking or wading in floodwater, which may be contaminated or contain sharp and dangerous debris.
