City of Thousand Oaks Celebrates National Public Works Week May 17-23, 2026

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., April 14, 2026— In May, the City of Thousand Oaks will celebrate its 39th annual National Public Works Week with a two-day Open House at the Municipal Service Center in Newbury Park. This public event honors the Public Works staff who provide and maintain essential infrastructure and services in Thousand Oaks.

The City of Thousand Oaks was recognized and accredited by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in November 2010 and has been re-accredited every four years. The 2026 National Public Works Week theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in Public Works. Public Works’ purpose is to meet the needs of community members, often without recognition, as its impact is continually present. Despite working quietly in the background, public works continuously enhances the quality of life for all residents.

City Public Works employees are vital first responders during emergencies, quickly restoring critical infrastructure by clearing roads, repairing utilities, and managing debris. Their work ensures Thousand Oaks can recover swiftly after a major emergency incident by maintaining safety and mitigating further damage.

The City Public Works Department maintains the City’s infrastructure, ensuring roads, traffic systems, and public facilities are safe and functional. Their work includes street repairs, traffic management, stormwater control, water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, fleet management, crossing guard services, and citywide landscape management. The Public Works Department also coordinates local emergency management services, capital projects, and promotes sustainability initiatives citywide. These efforts enhance residents' quality of life, safety, and accessibility.

The Thousand Oaks Public Works Week is an open house event that educates youth and adults throughout the Conejo Valley about what Public Works does 24 hours a day to serve the community. The two-day event is free and includes demonstrations on tree maintenance, graffiti removal, street repair, water conservation, recycling, water operations, and wastewater collection. Highlights include demonstrations of a landscape aerial lift and other heavy equipment.

The two-day open house will be held on Tuesday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Municipal Service Center located at 1993 Rancho Conejo Boulevard.
