Tour the Heritage Pollinator Garden

On Saturday, April 11, Conejo Valley Audubon invites the community to celebrate spring with a tour of the Heritage Pollinator Garden. Ten years ago, Conejo Valley Audubon, in partnership with the City of Thousand Oaks, planted a wide array of California native species, including Sugar Bush, Island Snapdragon, California Poppy, and more… and today those plants are thriving. The low-growing Manzanita ‘Pacific Mist’ is now stretching an impressive ten feet across.

The tour is designed not only to showcase this success but to inspire action. Guests can learn how California native plants support birds, pollinators, and overall ecosystem health. Educational handouts and resources will be available for those interested in transitioning to more environmentally friendly landscaping.

Early spring is one of the best times to plant California natives. Ideally planted in late fall, winter, or early spring, just before seasonal rains, native plants establish more easily and require significantly less water. Unlike drought-tolerant species, which still need periodic irrigation, true California natives are adapted to survive the region’s hot, dry summers with minimal supplemental watering once established. Choosing species specific to our region is key to their success and ecological value for native pollinators. Attend this tour to learn about how native plants are crucial to supporting our native pollinators.

Dee Lyon, from the Conejo Valley Audubon, will lead the tour and answer your questions about pollinators and native plants.
