Project overview

The intersection of Avenida De Los Arboles and Avenida De Las Plantas is a three-way, stop-controlled intersection that qualifies for the installation of a traffic signal based on its heavy levels of traffic entering from all legs of the intersection. We are aware that the stop sign control causes delays for motorists entering Ave. De Los Arboles from driveways and side streets during peak traffic times due to limited gaps in traffic flow. A traffic signal is expected to correct this issue.

The City has an ongoing program to identify and prioritize intersections that warrant a traffic signal. Analysis in both 2022 and 2025 has identified this intersection as the City’s #1 priority for signal installation. Therefore, a traffic signal for this intersection has been included in the City Council-approved 2025/26 and 2026/27 Capital Improvement Budget.

The proposed improvements for this intersection include the installation of traffic signals, controlled pedestrian crosswalks, street lighting, restriping of the roadway, and connecting the Class II bike lane from Calle Manzano to Calle Damasco.

Project Impacts

The planned improvements include the installation of a traffic signal and the restriping of the travel lanes leading to the intersection, which will involve reducing lane widths as a traffic calming measure. Additionally, there will be a signalized left-turn only lane for westbound traffic and a right-turn only lane for eastbound traffic. A striped center turn lane will be added between Calle Damasco and Avenida De Las Plantas, along with Class II bike lanes in both directions. The project will also enhance pedestrian access by introducing curb ramp extensions on the southeast and southwest corners and the north side of the intersection.

Project Benefits
  1. Easier car access onto Ave. De Los Arboles as the signal will create gaps in traffic.
  2. Additional illumination at the intersection.
  3. Continuity for Class II Bike Lanes.
  4. Enhanced pedestrian mobility with curb extensions:
  5. Improved visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
  6. Reduced pedestrian walking distance.
  7. Better nighttime visibility.
  8. Dedicated pedestrian crossing signals.
  9. Accessible walking path through the intersection.
  10. Eliminates issues caused by vehicles that currently fail to stop at the existing stop signs.
  11. Protection of mature oak trees.

Project Timeframe

The project design phase will begin in Fall 2025, with construction expected to start in Fall 2026.
