Jacob Flame’s Tang Soo Do University

300 Giant Oak Ave, Newbury Park, CA 91320

This year (2025), Jacob Flame’s Tang Soo Do University celebrates a remarkable milestone - twenty years of empowering minds and bodies in Thousand Oaks. But the roots of this institution reach even deeper, planted long before its doors officially opened.

Jacob Flame grew up in Thousand Oaks, where he discovered his passion for martial arts early in his life. Through dedication to his training, Jacob experienced growth both physically and mentally. He found the lessons learned and perspective gained could be applied across his life — as an individual, friend, family man, business owner, and member of his community. Ultimately, martial arts helped shape Jacob’s character. Even from a young age, Jacob’s dream was to one day open his own studio. As he continued his martial arts journey, his desire to share the gifts it offers with others around him grew.

Motivated by an unwavering passion and his partner Kinsie’s steadfast support, the two began offering lessons at local schools. Before long, they had built a reputation for excellence and attracted a loyal student base. By 2005, the time had come to find an appropriate home for Jacob Flame’s Tang Soo Do University.

Jacob and Kinsie Flame still remember the day they opened the doors in Thousand Oaks. It was a moment filled with pride intermingled with nerves about the unknown ahead. As the years unfolded, so did their challenges—from shifting economic tides to the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each time, they confronted those challenges like a unique opponent. They adapted, outmaneuvered, and persevered. Twenty years later, they remain standing – triumphant and stronger than ever.

Beyond their achievements in business growth and resilience lies a deep legacy of positive impact on our broader community. For two decades, they have helped students of all ages not only develop their martial arts skills but also refine their overall character. Students learn integrity, respect, focus, and self-control. They develop leadership skills and are taught about the value of civic engagement. Jacob and Kinsie Flame lead by example. Jacob volunteers for local school district PTA fundraisers, teaches specialty PE classes, gives motivational speeches, and leads run clubs. You can also find Jacob on the baseball field, volunteering to coach during the spring and fall. Equally committed, Kinsie sits on many local school district committees. She’s involved in the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce and volunteers at multiple community events. She also serves on the board of the county’s only diaper bank. Jacob and Kinsie also volunteer for Relay for Life Conejo Valley.

Jacob Flame’s Tang Soo Do is more than a business, it is a vibrant community that quietly strengthens and enriches lives throughout our city. The next time you’re near the University at 300 Giant Oak Avenue or pass by one of their off-site classes at the Dos Vientos Community Center or Thousand Oaks Teen Center, take a moment to watch. You’ll see your neighbors in action, kicking their way toward a stronger, more compassionate Thousand Oaks.
