Bicycles are rolling into this year’s Arbor Earth Day celebration in a variety of ways! You can take part in the ever-popular bicycle safety course and helmet giveaway for kids, contribute to the used bike collection for underserved youth, and check out the new electric bikes on display! This free family event will take place on Saturday, April 19th from 10am – 2pm, at Thousand Oaks Community Park located at 2525 N. Moorpark Road, next to Thousand Oaks High School.
The Arbor Earth Day event promotes sustainable living, and cycling is a prime example with benefits that include:
·No fossil fuels, making it a great way to get around while avoiding high gasoline prices!
·No air pollution
·Improved physical health (cardiovascular endurance, strength, weight control)
Besides the environmental and health benefits, cycling is simply a fun way to spend time with family and friends outdoors. So, hop on your saddle and pedal on down to the event!
Bicycle Rodeo & Helmet Giveaway
Don’t let the name fool you, the Glenn Garvin Memorial “bicycle rodeo”, is a fun, educational activity for children and teens. Participants ride (or walk) through the "Safe Moves City" course which teaches bicycle and pedestrian safety in a simulated traffic situation. Bring your own bike or choose from a variety of different-sized bikes that will be provided. Your choice! Participants will be fitted with a new bicycle helmet to navigate the course and can keep the helmet when they finish!
Bicycle Donations
Have a used bike that your child has outgrown or is taking up valuable space in your garage? Bring it to the event! The Conejo Recreation and Park District’s (CRPD) youth outreach program will be collecting gently used or new bicycles at their booth. The donated bikes must be fully functional. Through the CRPD Teen Center, the bikes will be provided to underserved Conejo Valley youth who don’t have transportation to school or work.
Electric Bicycles (E-bikes)
Curious or interested in an e-bike? Local bicycle retailer, Pedego 101, will have several different models of electric bicycles on display and staff will be available to answer questions and provide insight. With the growing popularity of e-bikes, this is an ideal opportunity to check out the bikes and ask questions.
