THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., August 12, 2024- With approved tree removal permits, the City will begin removing six failing oak trees across the Civic Arts Plaza this week. After extensive testing by a third-party arborist of most trees across the property, it was determined that these trees could experience immediate failure, threatening the safety of people and property. The trees being removed are two hazardous Coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) trees and four hazardous Valley oak (Quercus lobata) trees. The rest of the trees on the campus remain in good health at this time and will continue to be monitored.

The City's unwavering commitment to preserving and protecting oak trees remains steadfast. The safety of the public remains the City's top responsibility as the oak tree population ages and faces environmental challenges citywide. The large oaks, when in a state of failure, can pose a significant danger to the public. While not considered a designated scenic resource or located in a scenic resource area, the subject trees will be replaced as per the City's Oak Tree Preservation and Protection Guidelines. The City will identify opportunities for replacement trees in appropriate locations, such as within medians, in the coming months.
