The HHW Home Collection program provides a free and convenient way to properly dispose of hazardous materials right from your doorstep!

October 2024. Do you have hazardous materials that you need to dispose of, but are unable to bring the materials to the City’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility on a Friday or Saturday? Athens Services and the City have teamed up to offer a solution! The HHW Home Collection program provides a free and convenient way to properly dispose of hazardous materials right from your doorstep!

Follow these steps to make your HHW home collection appointment:

  1. Call (805) 852-5264 to request a pick-up.
  2. You will be contacted to review the inventory of your HHW items and schedule your collection date. Instructions will be sent to you within one week of your collection date.
  3. Package your items in a sturdy cardboard box or plastic bin. Items must be smaller than 5 gallons and total materials must not exceed 15 gallons or 125 pounds. Your cardboard box will be recycled, and your plastic bin will be returned.
  4. If you use a box, tape along the seam on the bottom for added support. Make sure to keep the box or bin open so you can see the contents.
  5. Ensure items in the box or bin are sturdy and have lids or tops securely fastened. Seal any leaking containers in a sealable bag or in a larger non-leaking container.
  6. Place items upright and do not stack items. Use newspaper to cushion items so they do not to fall or tip over within the box or bin.
  7. Never mix materials in a single container.
  8. Original containers with labeling are recommended. Re-label contents if the label is unclear. This is helpful for staff to identify what’s in a container.
  9. By 7:00 am on your scheduled pick-up date, place your box(es) or bin(s) on your front porch or near your front door. They must be on your property and visible from the street. Do not place any items at your curb or in the public right-of-way.
  10. You will receive a receipt describing the items and quantities that were picked up, and any unpermitted items will be left behind and identified on the receipt.
