Learn about how to properly dispose of large items that you no longer have a use for.

July 2024. Is it time to dispose of that ragged, old, love seat, the mini fridge that you have had since college that is no longer working, or perhaps you have decided it’s time to retire the old gas mower and upgrade to an electric one? The trash cart’s not big enough! What do you do with these large items that you no longer have a use for?

Depending on the item and whether it is still usable, you could possibly donate it. A good first choice. But if this isn’t feasible, your second option is to have the item picked up by the City’s waste hauler, Athens Services. Large, oversized, or overweight household items that do not fit in your trash cart, like water heaters, washers, dryers, televisions, computers, furniture, etc., are considered bulky items and require special handling.

Thousand Oaks residents may request up to two free collections and a total of six bulky items picked up for FREE per calendar year. (Additional collections are subject to a fee). To schedule a collection with Athens Services call (805) 852-5264. On the morning of your scheduled pick-up, simply place the bulky item at your curbside, and Athens will do the rest. It’s that easy!

Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and some limitations apply. As a general rule, items that can be picked up or handled by one person are accepted. Refrigerators and freezers may incur a freon disposal fee. For more information about bulky item collection with Athens Services click HERE

Smaller appliances, such as toaster ovens, blenders, or vacuums, can be dropped off at a Goodwill donation center. Goodwill is a certified e-waste recycler and will accept appliances and other electronic products, working or not. They do not accept larger appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines. You can find out more information on where to dispose of common household items, including hours of operation on our Reuse and Donations page.

Mattress disposal: Although mattresses can be picked up by Athens as a bulky item, State law requires retailers to haul away your old mattress when they deliver a new mattress to you, so we recommend that you utilize this option. More information about mattress collection is available at this link.
