Getting a Charge at Your Library

Level 2 EV chargers are now available at the Newbury Park and Grant Brimhall Libraries.

Libraries aren’t just for borrowing books. They are also great places to do homework, borrow an induction cooktop at the Library of Things, learn computer programs, and now, they can also be a convenient stop for charging your electric vehicle (EV).

The City has installed eight Level 2 charging stations at the Grant Brimhall Library and six at the Newbury Park Library. As every charging station is slightly different, this blog will walk you through how to take advantage of these new EV Gateway charging stations.

How to Use the Charging Stations

There are two ways to use the charging station. You can download the EV Gateway app, which allows users to locate a charger, start and stop charging, and track usage. But if you prefer not to use the app, there is a payment kiosk at both library locations where you can pay using a credit card, debit card, or even a prepaid card.

It costs $0.35 per kWh to charge, and there are no transaction fees. Once charging is complete, there is a 30-minute grace period to move your vehicle. After the grace period, users will be charged idle fees of $0.25 per minute, up to a maximum of $10.

If you're new to EVs, using a public Level 2 charger, here’s a quick guide to get you started:

  1. Park and Locate the Charger – Pull into the designated EV parking spot and locate the charging station.
  2. Connect the Charger – Open your vehicle's charging port and plug in the connector.
  3. Initiate Charging – Use the EV Gateway app or the payment kiosk to start the session.
  4. Monitor Charging – The app will display real-time charging status and notify you when you have finished charging, or you can check the charger’s screen.
  5. End the Session and Unplug – When finished, stop charging via the app or kiosk, unplug the connector, and return it to the station.
  6. Move Your Vehicle – You must move your vehicle within 30 minutes of completing charging to avoid idle fees.

Using these chargers is a convenient way to top off your battery while studying, attending a workshop, or picking up library materials. Whether you’re an EV pro or just starting your journey, the library’s charging stations offer a practical and eco-friendly solution for your transportation needs.
