Janss Road Utility Underground Project
A City Council approved Utility Undergrounding Master Plan identifies arterial roadways with above-ground utilities as a top priority. Janss Road is priority project #4 and is the highest project not yet started. Southern California Edison (SCE) is using Rule 20A Program credits and ratepayer funds to underground the utilities on Janss Road.
This project will be completed in phases and includes the undergrounding of electric, telephone and communication systems, and conversion of existing lines from overhead to underground. The goal is to remove all the overhead utilities. Impacts may include:
- Periodic lane closures along Janss Road during construction.
- Conversion of connections from overhead to underground.
- Undergrounding of utility boxes, switches, and transformers.
Timeline and Funding
In 2021, City Council approved the formation of the Janss Road Utility Underground District (UUD). This project is in the SCE project design phase. Once a design plan is completed, a construction schedule will be developed and posted to this site. Construction expected to start in the 3rd quarter of 2023. This site will be updated as the project proceeds, including providing updates directly to property owners.
Approximately $1.9 million in CPUC Rule 20A work credits will be used to fund this SCE project. No property assessments are necessary.
