Polybutylene Service and Valve Replacements
This project includes replacing existing water infrastructure that has been identified that needs replacement. Elements of the work include replacing existing water distribution valves, saddles, water meter boxes, polybutylene water services with copper tubing and installation of cathodic protection, replacement of ¾” copper service line, traffic control, and all appurtenant work to complete the project.
Polybutylene was the standard material used for water service lines installed in the 1970’s. However, due to frequent leakage/breakage caused by the old age and the nature of the material used, these Polybutylene service lines are being replaced with new copper lines in an ongoing citywide program.
These valves are over 35 years old, most cannot be opened and closed fully, and in some cases are not operable at all. Replacement of the valves allows the mainline shutdowns required maintenance for residential service lines.
