What is the summer beach bus?
The Summer Beach Bus is a regularly scheduled public transit service that travels Monday - Thursday between Thousand Oaks and Zuma Beach in Malibu, and on Friday & Saturdays between Thousand Oaks and Ventura Harbor.
When does the bus leave and where do I pick it up at?
The Beach Bus departs from two locations:
- Borchard Community Center (inside the parking lot)
- Thousand Oaks Teen Center Bus Stop
- and drops off and picks up at the Zuma Beach - Lot 8 parking lot (Monday - Thursday) or Ventura Harbor Cove Beach (Friday and Saturday).
There are two round-trip daily, Mondays through Thursdays, to Zuma Beach and Fridays and Saturdays to Ventura Harbor. The service starts on June 15 and ends on August 8, except on July 4th.
How much does it cost?
The regular fare is $4.00 round trip. $1.00 for seniors age 65 and over and for persons with a disability. K-12th grade and college students RIDE FREE.
How do I ride the bus?
Service is available on a first-come, first-served basis at each departure location. Fares are cash only, and exact change is required. It is recommended to arrive early as seating is limited.
How much time do I get to spend at the beach?
Between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the trips selected.
Is there an age limit?
As a public transit service, Thousand Oaks Transit’s standard age policies apply. Persons under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult. It is recommended that a responsible guardian accompany individuals under the age of 13. If, in the driver's opinion, a passenger lacks the ability to understand how to use the bus independently, they may be denied transportation.
How long does it take to get there?
Depending on which stop you get on at, it could take up to 75 minutes to get to the beach or return, depending on traffic.
Can I track the beach bus?
Real-time tracking information for the beach bus can be found using the GOVCbus App or on GOVCbus.com. Look for the Summer Beach Bus route under Thousand Oaks Transit.
What happens if I miss the bus back from the beach?
This is a public transportation service, and buses will depart on time unless delayed due to traffic or other unforeseen conditions. Riders missing their bus will need to make their own travel arrangements home.
What about infants?
Use of an approved child seat is required for all infants. Since the child seat will have to occupy an available seat, we have to charge a fare.
Can I use my TOT bus pass or VC bus pass?
No, this is a premium service and is not eligible for TOT or VCTC bus passes
Can I bring my surfboard?
Surfboards, not exceeding 7 feet in length, may be brought on board the buses. Limit of 2 surfboards per bus.
Is the beach bus accessible for mobility devices?
The Summer Beach Bus service will provide a vehicle accessible for mobility devices upon request. Please call (805) 375-5467 for any questions or concerns.
Both Zuma Beach and Ventura Harbor offer free beach wheelchair rentals. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more details, please visit their official websites:
Please note: This service is not affiliated with the City of Thousand Oaks’ Beach Bus. Beach Bus drivers are not responsible for monitoring personal wheelchairs or rented beach wheelchairs when not in use.
Can I bring chairs, umbrellas, “boogie” boards and coolers on board?
There is limited storage for coolers, chairs, umbrellas, backpacks, boogie boards, etc., on board the bus. Nothing flammable or dangerous can be brought on board the bus. If an item cannot be safely transported, it will not be allowed on board. All decisions of the driver are final.
